Certainty. What Makes You So Sure?
Dozens of different flavors of Christianity are certain of their own secret sauce but reject the taste of all the others. Scores of different shapes and sizes of Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism and other religions have their special, unique certainties. Some go so far in their beliefs that they kill abortion doctors or knock down tall towers to prove their point. True believers are delighted to burn, behead or lynch non-believers, because they are absolutely sure while the burnees are less sure, not sure at all. Or they are sure of something equally unproven.
Then we come to a different species of certainty. Atheists. They are certain there is no God. Certain, mind you. But luckily for all of us, they won’t take our heads if we rub them the wrong way.
Certainty is the state of having no doubt whatsoever. Certainty is knowing something with such clarity that you stop discussion on the subject. Gavel down. Subject over.
COMOLOM says you cannot be certain of “The God Question.” No amount of knowledge, no scientific discovery, no pursuit of truth will lead to certainty about this question. If you are certain there is a God or certain there is no God, you’ve come to that conclusion on your own. COMOLOM says certainty is THE problem. COMOLOM is pretty sure of that.
